I... stumbled, so to speak, upon a track labeled as one of my favorite bands, covering another one of my favorite bands. And I figured, "Well, this is probably a mislabel, but I might as well check and be sure, and feel like a dope for trying."
So, I listened to the intro. And I thought, 'Wow, this is pretty good, but it's probably a band that just sounds like HOLY SHIT IT'S REALLY ALEXANDER VELJANOV AND MY FACE WHERE IS IT I BELIEVE IT HAS FALLEN OFF FROM BEING ROCKED TOO HARD".
... So, uh, yes. If you are a serious-to-semi-ironic fan of even more oddly-voiced classic 80s Gothic covers, music that wouldn't sound too out-of-place on an episode of The Clockwork Cabaret, or violins coming after you to kick your ass, then by all means, have a listen!
Deine Lakaien, "Alice" (originally by The Sisters Of Mercy)
A nice cap on an otherwise-awkward and unpleasant day.

So today's Darths and Droids made me inexplicably go and buy Les Misérables songs. And I never even liked Les Miz that much, FFS.
Oh, and I turned off my brain to see Sherlock Holmes this weekend. It was actually kind of fun... Though seeing Rachel McAdams in a period setting, even a wackjob one, just... Doesn't work for me. She just doesn't fit. Weird.

January 12th is the date considered by some to be a sort of "anniversary" in Daniel/Janet fandom, because on January 12, 2001 the episode "2010" aired for the first time. That episode is one of the classic Dan/Jan eps, not least of which because it's when both Michael and Teryl played around a bit with potential context between those characters.
Well, this year the January 12th date will be extra-special because it will actually be the same as the title of the episode: 2010. So there's going to be a party! The details are here, in the Dan/Jan LJ community. Spread the word, and join us if you can.

| Baby It's Cold Inside |
[05 Jan 2010|09:16am] |
It's cold outside; highs in the low 30s, into the teens at night, but it's really cold inside the convention hotels. The hotel staff blame it on wandering economists who go from hotel to hotel all day long for sessions and interviews, which means that the doors are always open. Me, I think the Atlanta hotels are all designed to let heat rise in the summer. I'm guessing it's nice and toasty up at the top of those atriums (atria?).
I am taking the morning off from networking and sessions to get caught up with work email. Yesterday I gave a talk at breakfast, today I'm presenting at a lunch and a dinner, so at least I'm getting fed! I'm really enjoying the sessions this year; either it is an unusually good program or my current job has made me much broader in my interests. Probably some of both.
Today is the last day of the convention. Lunch and dinner today are with two different mentoring programs for young academic economists. I spend most of the day tomorrow with the women's mentoring program, and then I'm flying back late.
I did get to see P. on Friday; she'd delayed her trip to Texas by a day. I got to meet the girls! Chloe and Maddie are both adorable. Didn't get to see Dr. Who, but that just means I have something to look forward to once I'm back in DC. Thanks to you all for being so spoiler-sensitive!

| more bizarre knitting |
[04 Jan 2010|11:46pm] |
Hey look, another finished object! (That I started in October, but nevermind that.)
It's a baby chicken hat!
.
The story is this: my BFF from grad school collects chickens. (Er, figurines and stuff like that, not actual live chickens.) She and her husband had their first baby in October, so of course I had to make their little boy a wee chicken hat. The earflap hat pattern generator worked great! I decided not to put ties on the earflaps since I worry about young babies and string-type things.
Main yarn is KnitPicks Shine Sport in Cream, knit on size 6 circs. The orange and red yarn is just scraps of Cotton Classic, the yarn I use for my Baby Jayne hats. I double-crocheted the comb on the top and made a garter-stitch bias square for the beak, then sewed it on. The eyes are black and white felt that are sewn on. (I thought about making some bobbles for googly eyes, but was defeated by my lack of black and white cotton yarn.) I'm really not too sure about the eye placement, but I could only fiddle with it for so long. :-P For the photos, it's being modeled by one of our Darth Vader snow globes covered in a scrap piece of black wool.
I hope they like it, and that it fits!

| Hey guys! |
[04 Jan 2010|10:53pm] |
I'm new here, and I want to knit or crochet an HP scarf. Well, hopefully more than just that, but that's my first goal. I've never done either before so I'll be starting from scratch completely, and I was wondering which I should choose to do: knit or crochet? Initially I was thinking I just want to do what's the easiest, but I know myself, and that just won't do. I'm already anticipating having to make the scarf several times before I'm satisfied with it, so that's not a problem. I want to know what will look better and tighter, and which craft I'll have more flexibility with when I'm done with the initial scarf. I'm thinking probably knitting. I skimmed down the page of HP patterns and most of them seemed to be for knitting, but I don't really know what I'm looking at. What do you guys think?
EDIT: I'm thinking I'd like to knit the atypically.net pattern POA scarf that everyone seems to be talking about, but the site is down or something. I can't access it. Has it been posted anywhere else?

We were mostly on the road Saturday, but it was actually my 7th LJ-versary!!!
Back in those days, I'd been commenting anonymously (and just signing my name) on various LJs, but several friends convinced me to get an account to use for replying... and queenofthorns gave me an invite code (they were still required at that point) so I could create an account. Originally, I had no intention of posting here and, in fact, I didn't make my first post until the end of March of that year. Now I don't know where I'd be without LJ... I've gotten to know so many cool people and make some really good friends over the years.
In other news, it's great to be home again! We'd originally planned on getting home Sunday, but changed our minds after we pulled into the Tri-Cities (Richland, Pasco, Kennewick) Saturday night. We got there about 6:00pm and headed toward the hotel we usually stay at, thinking it was great we'd gotten there so early because it meant we had plenty of time to go out to dinner and then to a movie. But then it occurred to us that we were about three hours from home and the only reason we would be staying in the Tri-Cities was so we could go to the movie... so we checked pass conditions, drove around in vain for far too long trying to find a particular restaurant, gave up and ate the sandwiches we had the cooler, then headed for home. So glad we did! Nothing beats sleeping in your own bed.
( And we went to see 'Sherlock Holmes' at a theater close to home, instead! (No plot spoilers) )

And finally, today's photo entry!
Fourteen years and two days ago, rackham started working at Microsoft and has never worked on January 2nd again since! One of the traditions in some parts of the Evil Empire is to bring in one pound of M&Ms for every year you've been employed on the anniversary of your start date. Next year, we're going to need a bigger bowl.

TITLE: Sapphire, a Jewl to his heart. a Draco Love story PERPETRATOR: harrypotterrokx SUE-O-METER: (awful)
FULL NAME: Sapphire Weasley SPECIES: Witch HAIR: "curly auburn hair and her straight bangs that swept diagonally across her forehead" EYES: not described MARKINGS: none described POSSESSIONS: "white sleeveless dress that fell down to her upper thighs with pure black tights underneath and boots that went up to a couple inches below her knees".
ORIGIN: Ramón and Saraphine Weasley are her parents. She is starting Hogwarts during sixth year. CONNECTIONS TO CANON: She is Harry's second cousin, and Ron's first cousin. Harry, Ron and Hermione take her shopping in Diagon Alley. Draco hits on her in Diagon Alley, and while offended, she can't stop thinking about him. Obviously they are going to end up together. SPECIAL ABILITIES: She is very shy and speaks in a very quiet voice. A sort of shrinking violet.
NOTES: Lily and James Potter were not killed by Voldemort, just stunned. For some reason, Voldemort's killing curse still didn't work on Harry, despite the fact that Lily didn't die saving Harry. They end up having four more kids, and Sirius Black never went to Azkaban.
( Don't let her moping ruin your party Harry! )

TITLE: Your Harry Potter Life! Dumbeldore's Granddaughter. PERPETRATOR: JazziJ101 SUE-O-METER: (awful)
FULL NAME: Jas Dumbledore SPECIES: Witch HAIR: "shoulder length black hair" EYES: "dark blue eyes that look black when not in the sun" MARKINGS: "tanned skin" POSSESSIONS: a Hogwarts letter, her own bank account with 100 galleons from Dumbledore, "long jersey top that reached past my knee and half way down from their. [...] short shorts (not slutty ones just PJ ones.)",
ORIGIN: She has been waiting to go to Hogwarts her whole life. Now she gets to go. Yipee! She lost her father "tragically". She is not allowed to tell anyone that she is Dumbledore's granddaughter. CONNECTIONS TO CANON: Dumbledore's granddaughter. I would assume that any granddaughter of Dumbledore would be McGonagall's age. No? She meets and befriends Harry and Ron on the Hogwarts Express. She is sorted into Gryffindor and chats up "Hermine" at the table. They become friends, of course. Draco stares at her across the Great Hall. She has a crush on Harry, but doesn't like Ginny because she likes Harry too. Harry asks her to the Yule Ball. SPECIAL ABILITIES: Is very excitable. She knows that Voldemort isn't dead and that something is going happen. She hears voices that tell her that they are coming after her. It's probably Voldemort, or Draco.
NOTES: After the sorting, the Suethor decides to skip ahead to fourth year. I am sure this is to help the plot, and not so she can just skip ahead to the dating.
( It took you an hour to find that dress? Every prom-style dress is like that. )

| Happy New Year (a few days late!) |
[03 Jan 2010|04:41pm] |
Hope everyone had a great New Year's Eve and that 2010 is a fabulous year. Tomorrow I jump back into my routine - the two weeks of vacation with family is coming to an end. It's been great to recharge but I look forward to work. Commission work tomorrow and then working on having an enormous update later this week!
So what have I been doing? Good question! Lots of lazing around, painting, playing Wii, watching movies, curling up with art books, cooking, EATING, staying up late, and just enjoying myself.
Just to show you that I haven't been completely without creative outlet during the break here are some shots of a couple of my latest Spontaneous Journal entries. I am getting so much out of this exercise and it has even inspired a couple of colorways!
This one took longer than the 5 minutes - it was made up of an acrylic painting I did in five minutes and then tore up and collaged with images of crysalis and then watercolored over. The Spontaneous Journal has been a jumping off point for quite a bit of work with our group.

This one did take 5 minutes though the prep for it took longer. I tore up an acrylic painting I didn't like, and tore up some pictures I'd collected of gears and glued them down and then I painted for 5 minutes with watercolors.
This has been a fun adventure. If anyone wants to join Spontaneous Journal give me a holler. We have a nice group of people on there!
